First Day of School
2007-09-10 (Monday) 22:29 CDT

The fall-like day and coolness in the air was a hint to let us know that this was a day of change for Cameron, and our family. Cam started preschool today. We have been preparing for this first day for weeks. I would remind him that "only big boys can go to preschool, so you have to be a big boy and share your toys, because that is what we do in preschool". I overused phrases about preschool all summer in preparation for this day. We potty-trained for preschool, we bought new clothes for preschool, and practiced our letters and counting for preschool. We talked about how Porter and I would take him to preschool and pick him up, but that he would stay at the classroom all by himself with his teachers and friends. I was probably more anxious than he was the night before. I worried about how I would handle a tantrum and "keep my cool" in front of all those new moms and teachers. But Cameron showed how Big he really was today. He listened to me about staying on task and getting ready for school. He let me take pictures with no complaining, and he held his new red school bag over his little shoulder and walked with me to his class. He hung his bag up on the hook with the frog symbol, to remind him where his bag was. He gave me a kiss and hug and walked into his class. His teacher gave him the option of greeting him with a hug, hand-shake, or high-five. Cameron gave his teacher a handshake and walked on in, never looking back. Porter and I went off to the park to spend quality one-on-one time together. I met Cameron at his classroom door follwing his first day and he yelled out "Mommy" and ran to me with a big hug. I am so proud of him. It is a little sad to think that I can't go back in time with Cam and have him be my little baby again, but we have been preparing for this day for three years. It is reassuring to me to think of all that he will become from this day forward.

My Little Helper
2007-09-10 (Monday) 21:40 CDT

Porter is on the run. He will be 16 months on September 23. Porter is saying many words, (i.e. choo-choo, bye-bye, here, thank you, baby, car, shoes). P.J. is stacking blocks, and has been practicing 1-3 piece puzzles. He loves being my little helper and will try to fold clothes and sweep the floor. Porter will help pick up toys, brings me his shoes when it is time to go, and helps water the plants outside. He has always been laid back, but recently has started getting upset and "grunting" when he can't munipulate his toy the way he would like. And he doesn't let big brother trade toys with him like he used to, no way, he knows what he wants. He will soon find all the words to express those frustrations.
