Summer is for Family

Memorial Day Parade
2008-06-10 (Tuesday) 0:14 CDT
Grandpa B entered the Army in May 1971 as a 2nd Lieutenant. After 25 years as
an officer in the Army, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1996. What I
remember about my dad being in the Army was moving a lot. The furthest place we
lived was Germany which I unfortunetly was too young to remember. However, we
have very old movies, pictures, and well-crafted wooden toys to show that I
spent my first three years of life there. When my family lived off base (in
civilian homes), I recall going to military bases for dental work, and renewing
dependent ID cards. We always stopped by the commissary and PX for
untaxed
goods. I never quite knew all the duties that my dad had in the Army. As a
child I knew my dad always wore a uniform to work and his office displayed old
army artifacts and military posters. The buildings all had a certain
"military" smell. Even though I never quite knew what my dad did on a daily
basis I know that my dad was always proud to work for the Army. In honor of
Grandpa B's long service in the military, he rode in their local Memorial
Day Parade. Cameron was able to ride in the car too, but unfortunetly you
could not see him well, since he was in a carseat. Cam had a blast waving his
flag at the spectators. Cameron is very much into GI Joe action figures, tanks
and Army jeeps, so it was cool that he got to see grandpa in his dress greens.
Grandpa will have to tell Cameron and Porter about his military service and
Army stories as they grow older, and I should listen too, I am sure I will
learn a lot.
Also pictured above is infamous, USAF Astronaut, Col. Buzz Aldrin, who was an
honorary parade marshall. Below are more pictures from the day that I
wanted to share.
Memorial Day Airshow
2008-06-09 (Monday) 19:27 CDT
Over Memorial Day weekend, there was an airshow at the local airport near
grandma and grandpa's home. The planes were very loud and scared Porter a
little, but the trainride calmed him down. Cameron got an autograph from one
of the parachuters and they both went up in a jeep for a sky view.
Porter is 2
2008-06-05 (Thursday) 22:14 CDT
Porter turned 2 years old on May 23, 2008. He is definetly a mini-Cam. He
loves imitating his big brother and tries to do every stunt that Cam does. Not
to mention his speech and vocabulary is not far behind a 3-year-olds. Porter
does not hestitate to say new words and is talking in 4-5 word sentences.
Porter is a little dare devil when it comes to climbing and jumping, so he
keeps me on my toes. Porter is in love with Elmo and Thomas the Tank Engine.
We had his 2nd birthday party at our house with a few of his friends and Elmo
was the theme. We posted some birthday
pictures from his party. At Porter's 2-year check-up he weighed 26 pounds
putting him in the 20% for weight and he is 50% for height. Porter and I are
able to spend more one-on-one time when Cam has been in preschool this year and
he has a couple of more weeks of summer camp. Porter and I go to the park
together, jog together, visit storytime at the library, or explore the local
children's museum. We started spending time at our city pool where he is
getting used to the water again. We have also been going to the zoo and Porter
likes riding the train and seeing all the animals he has been learing about in
books. I notice the changes in Porter on a daily basis now and I marvel at all
the new words and observations that he makes. However I also am sad at times
because he is growing up and there is no going back to that little baby. But
as I look into the future at how much fun the boys will have as they continue
developing their relationship with one another it is heartwarming. Stay tuned
for Cameron's upcoming birthday in June.
Turkey Creek Festival
2008-06-03 (Tuesday) 21:35 CDT
After Cameron and I ran our hearts out racing early in the morning, we headed
down to the local festival where there were moonwalks, boats, train rides,
caricature artist, food, music, and lots of crafts. Cam wanted to build a
birdhouse in the Home Depot shelter, but I think the race took a lot out of
him, because I ended up doing all the hammering. The boys were asleep before
we got back to the car. It was a long fun-filled day for all.
Cam's Sprint and Mom's 5K
2008-06-03 (Tuesday) 20:30 CDT
Cameron ran his first Youth Sprint of the year and came in second place in his
heat. He was so proud of his medal that he said he wanted to wear it all day
to show everyone. We tried to get Porter to run the Sprint, but he was too
scared. He did enjoy practicing with Cameron before the race. I finished my 5K
with a personal record time of 20:40. I too was very proud to get under 21
minutes, especially on such a hilly run. This will most likely be my last
race
until I do a couple of half marathons this fall. I think I am due for a break.
