Halloween 2009
2009-11-29 (Sunday) 23:19 CST
We had several Hallween events the last week of October that kept us very busy.
I was a little too busy to take many decent pictures, therefore some events I
have no pictures. We started the week with a haunted Halloween swim and
carnival in Mission. Then we attended the Shawnee trick or treating. Cameron
saw several of his classmates at this event. I helped as room parent at
Cameron's Hallween Party. The school had a parade and then myself and another
mother led the class in several games. I made the eyeballs. I think the party
was hit.
Porter had his class party the next day. Since it was raining that morning they
had their parade indoors. Below is a picture of Porter's preschool class. I
found Sesame Street Hallween books to give out as party favors to Porter's
classmates.
One evening Merriam had their annual Hallween Candy scramble. It was a really
warm night for this event. They had a cake walk, pumpkin painting, pumpkin
bowling and the kids scored big in the scramble. They had tons a of candy
spread out in the lawn and the kids used flashlights to hunt for their candy.
Cam wanted to be scary, so we quickly put together a vampire costume for this
event.
Finally on Hallween it was another gorgeous day, so I kept my promise to take
them to "Boo at the Zoo". Cam has been wanting to see the haunted pirate ship
display for a year. I told him we would go on Halloween as long as it was warm
enough. They had a really good time. They participated in another cake walk,
tractor trikes, a grave site walk, trick-or-treating, and of course the haunted
pirate ship. Cam decided to be batman for Halloween, though he started out
being Darth Vader at the beginning of the week. Porter wanted to stick with
Woody for each event. We actually got two years out of the Woody costume.
Next year, Buzz should fit him perfect if he is still a Toys Story fan. That
evening, we trick-or-treated around our neighborhood with neighbors and
friends. Afterwards we had kids and parents over for cookies and drinks. It
was a really fun Halloween, the boys already planning their costumes for next
year.
MIP "Most Improved Player"
2009-11-08 (Sunday) 20:27 CST
At the end of soccer season for Northeast United Soccer, each team member
received a participation medal. But I would give Cameron a more individualized
award for the season, MIP "Most Improved Player". Cameron went into soccer
very eager, but with almost no experience with a soccer ball. Matt and I don't
watch sports much at all on television, so pretty much no exposure to soccer
via the tube. We have both kicked the soccer ball around with the boys in the
backyard, but no emphasis on technique or rules. I never played soccer growing
up, I was in t-ball, softball, and basketball. Matt did play throughout
gradeschool but it was not a sport that he continued beyond that point.
A couple of great skills Cam had going into the game were coordination and
determination. As we watched Cam's skill level strengthen through the
practices and games, I also noticed another difference that set him apart from
some of the other players; he listened to his coaches and would adjust his
performance after receiving feedback from them. Towards the last game I
observed Cam watching the game from the sideline and encouraging his teammates
on, which is an advanced level of teamwork. Though he didn't score a goal at
every game, he showed improvement each week. We are very proud of Cam's
efforts and skill he displayed in his first soccer season. He is interested in
an indoor soccer clinic that starts in January and his coaches plan to pull the
team back together in the spring. I have to mention that I was very pleased
with his coaches, Matt and Tom.
I never wanted to be a "soccer mom", but I actually look forward to watching
Cameron play in the spring.
Kindergarten Field Trip
2009-11-08 (Sunday) 20:03 CST
In mid-October, I was able to attend Cameron's first class field trip. The
kindergarten classes explored Vaughn's Applie Orchard in Weston, MO. With
all the cold weather we had already experienced in October, we lucked out
and had a very mild day. At this farm, they had apple trees,
pumpkins, beehives, and plenty of farm animals to pet. I was glad to get
the kids to cooperate for a class picture with Mrs. Potter. They each
brought home a pumpkin and
a few
apples. It was a lot of fun, and for hanging out with about twenty
5-year-olds all day,
they were very well-behaved. Below is a pictures of Cam and his friend Mia's
pumpkin pick.
